Special Needs

Our School

The Catherine McAuley Centre caters for students from Pre Kindy -Yr 6 with disabilities that require special needs. We recognise the uniqueness of each individual student and have a responsibility to provide the highest quality education so that each student develops to their full potential.

The staff are committed to a team approach to teaching and learning in an inclusive setting to ensure that they are making best use of existing expertise and knowledge. Parents are also valued as a part of the team and are encouraged to contribute in the planning for their child’s  educational needs.

The students are all valued as learners and work from their own Individual Education Plan (IEP) which is developed in consultation with, parents, Catherine Centre teacher, mainstream teacher, therapists and the Catholic Education Office Consultant.

Students are part of a mainstream class but may be withdrawn individually or in small groups. The programmes focus on appropriate academic skills, encouraging independence, improving social/emotional competency, behavioural management and development of self care and communication skills.

Our students are exposed to working with a variety of Education Assistant’s so they do not become dependent. Our aim is to provide each student with the necessary skills to allow for a successful transition to high school.

Opportunities are also provided for students to access maximum participation in the mainstream classroom.

The children take part in the preparation of the sacramental programs with their peers. The Catherine Centre staff support students if necessary and attend excursions, camps, sports days and     participate in the school swimming program.

All staff at St Simon Peter School promotes the cognitive, emotional, social and spiritual development of students with disabilities and facilitates the purposeful inclusion of these students within the life and activities of St Simon Peter Catholic Primary School.
